In this illustrated talk, food historian Dr Annie Gray will bring to life the kitchens of Georgian England. Forming part of our lecture series celebrating 100 years of women’s suffrage, Annie will delve below stairs, looking at women as cooks and cookmaids, covering their working conditions, the dishes they made, and how they made them, and how they were perceived versus their more prestigious male counterparts. The lecture will also look at Georgian food in a broader context, explaining how meals worked, and showing quite how glorious the food served was. You may even go home with some tips for Georgianising your food this Easter.
Dr Annie Gray is a writer, academic, broadcaster and consultant. Specialising in British food history c.1650-1950, she’s just published her first book, The Greedy Queen: Eating with Victoria, and is currently working on a follow-up. She’s the resident food historian on BBC Radio 4’s The Kitchen Cabinet, and recently presented Victorian Bakers (BBC2) and The Sweetmakers (BBC2), the latter partly filmed at No. 1 Royal Crescent and other venues in Bath.
